Abstract :

In this study, first of its kind complete plant scale integration of pre-combustion CO2 capture method with Chemical Looping Reforming (CLR) of Natural Gas (NG), Water Gas Shift (WGS) process, CO2 capture and CO2 compression in a combined cycle power plant has been presented. The CLR consisted of oxidation and fuel reactor. The oxidation reactor oxidizes the metal oxygen carrier with compressed air and produces an oxygen depleted air stream (N2 stream) as by-product. The fuel reactor reforms the NG with the metal oxide in presence of steam to produce syngas. The syngas is further subjected to WGS and CO2 capture using a-MDEA, to prepare a H2-rich fuel, which is combusted in the Gas Turbine (GT) system. The heat from cooling of process streams in the pre-combustion CO2 capture method, is used to prepare saturated low pressure steam, fraction of which is used in reboiler to regenerate the amine for CO2 capture, and the remainder is expanded in Steam Turbine (ST) to generate power. Abstract :

Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) is one of the most promising technologies to achieve the CO2 capture at a low economic and energetic penalty. In CLC the combustion is split in two steps: fuel combustion assisted by an oxygen carrier in the fuel reactor, and oxygen carrier regeneration in the air reactor by oxygen in air. Usually, the air and fuel reactors are interconnected fluidized beds, with the oxygen carrier circulating between them. Thus, the CO2 capture is inherent to the CLC process. The use of solid fuels in CLC is attracting great attention due to coal is the most abundant fuel, and burning biomass with CO2 capture would allow to reduce the atmospheric CO2 concentration. The in situ Gasification CLC (iG-CLC) allows the conversion of the solid fuel by performing both gasification and combustion of gasification products in the fuel reactor. Abstract :

For coal and gas dual-fired boiler, pulverized coal mass flow and gas volume flow into furnace are important criteria for boiler operation adjustment, and they are important input parameters for boiler performance analysis. However, different from the gas volume flow measurement technique that is mature, the measurement of pulverized coal mass flow is difficult, especially for the boiler equipped with middle storage pulverizing system. In order to solve this problem, an indirect measurement method through other operation parameters was put forward to obtain the pulverized coal mass flow. Its solving idea is to calculate the coal combustion and the gas combustion, in order to get the flue gas products corresponding to unit mass of coal and unit volume of gas respectively, and then obtain the pulverized coal mass flow by the flue gas products and the gas volume flow. The SARC consists of a number of standalone reactors where a solid sorbent is carbonated by a flue gas and regenerated by a combination of vacuum and temperature swing. Efficiency is maximized through heat integration between carbonation and regeneration using a heat pump. Initial power plant simulations showed 9.4%-points energy penalty when integrated into a pulverized coal plant. This is in-line with reported energy penalty for MEA and VPSA technologies, but great potential for further efficiency improvements exists. Biomass combustion is a difficult phenomenon due to its properties with less carbon, more volatile matters and lower calorific value. Fixed bed combustion is a useful technique for thermal conversion of solid biomass fuels as this can fire up a broad range of fuels with different properties and requires less fuel preparation. But due to complex solid combustion mechanism and inadequate knowledge on process the development of such combustion system is limited. Abstract :

Power generation from biomass is an attractive technology which utilizes municipal solid waste-based refused derived fuel. In order to explain the behavior of biomass-fired fluidized bed incinerator, biomass sources from refuse derived fuel was co-fired with coal in a 0.15 m diameter and 2.3 m high fluidized bed combustor. The combustion efficiency and carbon monoxide emissions were studied and compared with those from pure coal combustion. This study proved that the blending effect had increased the carbon combustion efficiency up to 12% as compared to single MSW-based RDF. Carbon monoxide levels fluctuated between 200-1600 ppm were observed when coal is added. It is evident from this research that efficient co-firing of biomass with coal can be achieved with minimum modification of existing coal-fired boilers. Read more..

In order to develop a programmatic approach to the Trust Fund’s engagement in the Makran region, ESCAP has commissioned a consultancy to provide an up-to-date analysis of the Tsunami Early Warning Systems (TEWS) for the NWIO, highlighting the areas requiring further cooperation at regional, national and local levels.
